March 2020 - VERT & MRC veterinarian and sVERT faculty member Dr. Lais Costa talks about large animal emergency flood response. She has real life experience in this topic and shares her personal stories during the difficult time.
February 2020 - Dr. Lorraine Thompson-Barbosa and Responder Specialist Scott Bull from the Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN) discuss the preparation for and response to oil spills that affects California wildlife population.
October 2019 - Sonoma Country requests the assistance of UC Davis VERT to address animal rescue and welfare efforts during the Kincade fire spread across three different evacuation centers. Student VERT members are deployed to help under the guidance of Drs. John Madigan and Lais Costa.
August 2019 - Dr. Rick Arthur, the equine medical director at the Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory at UC Davis and at the California Horse Racing Board, provided an update on the status of horse racing in California. His expertise in horse racing injuries, regulation, drug testing, anabolic steroids, medications, veterinary procedures, and pre-race veterinary examinations was insightful.
June 2019 - Awards in Chico https://emsa.ca.gov/awards_nominations/ The UC Davis Veterinary Emergency Response Team accepted a commendation by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority for their help in animal response and rescue during the Camp Fire.
May 2019 - Sac zoo: https://www.saczoo.org/2019/05/saying-goodbye-to-beloved-giraffe-goody/ VERT aided in the final humane procedure for “Goody” ,the giraffe, in the Sacramento Zoo. The staff team along with VERT worked together to ensure the safety of workers and comfort of Goody through the whole process.
December 2018 - Texas A&M Animal Emergency Rescue visited UC Davis https://vetmed.tamu.edu/vet/ Dr. Welsey Bissett, director of Veterinary Emergency Team of Texas A&M, came to UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to talk to VERT about the deployment for Camp Fire.
October 2018 - Camp fire https://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/fire-updates VERT and sVERT was deployed to the Camp Fire in Butte County. Members conducted medical treatment to burn victims and established shelters for animals that were displaced. Created a novel passport identification system to keep a record of the companion animals housed at local shelters.
April 2018 - Director and Principal Scientist, Safety Assessment Pathology, Department of Development Sciences of Genentech, Dr. Noel Dybdal, came to discuss the opportunities for continuous improvement of veterinary support in disaster response.
October 2017 - https://leadership.ucdavis.edu/news/barta-uc-davis-2017-conference VERT and sVERT attended the BARTA (British Animal Rescue and Trauma Care Association) Conference in UC Davis campus and learned about providing advice, direction, training, and accreditation for those performing animal rescue and trauma care.
October 2017 - VERT and sVERT volunteers deploy to Sonoma County fire zone.
https://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/news/uc-davis-school-veterinary-medicine-wildfire-assistance-activities VERT was deployed out to the Tubbs Fire to aid in disaster response. Students and faculty played an active role in rescuing, relocating, and reuniting animals from the fire. VERT teamed up with experts to rescue koi fish from burned surrounds and gave them shelter.
September 2017 - IAWTI associate, volunteer and sVERT student participate in a 3 day outreach event in the Fire and Safety tent at the Auburn Home Show.

June 2017 - VERT awards certificates of completion to 68 sVERT Specialized Study Program veterinary students.
May 2017 - Jim Green presented at the annual California Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps meeting in Sacramento.
May 2017 - Jim Green met with Jim Danner (LARRCO), Tony Ward (Resquip) and Candace Aguilar (SVM Clinical Skills Lab technician) to discuss innovative life like animal models for training responders and veterinarians.
April 2017 - IAWTI team Dr. John Madigan, Dr. Eric Davis and Jim Green each present at Ranch Readiness Day in Sonoma.
April 2017 - IAWTI associates Dr. Tricia Andrade and Dr. Aki Tanaka each present three disaster preparedness and response abstracts and attend four days of professional development at the 20th World Association of Disaster and Emergency Medicine Congress in Toronto.

April 2017 - IAWTI associate, Dr. Tricia Andrade, presents one day Barn Basics workshop on stable safety and emergency preparedness at Santa Rosa Junior College to equine management students.
April 2017 - IAWTI team conducts all day workshop to sVERT specialized study program participants. The activities included a companion animal sheltering exercise and large animal technical rescue.
April 2017 - Jim Green collaborates with UC Davis Animal Science Department to deliver animal handling training lectures and hands-on labs to UC Davis Fire and Police department first responders to enhance campus safety.
March 2017 - IAWTI team delivers four track lectures to sVERT specialized study program participants on companion animal and large animal handling/restraint/movement; evacuation; sheltering and triage.

February 2017 - The third and final core lecture (humane euthanasia) to sVERT club specialized study program was presented by Dr. John Madigan, Dr. Eric Davis and Dr. Monica Aleman.
February 2017 - Jim Green and the IAWTI/CEH disaster team continue meetings with incidents involving animals contacts such as main campus Animal Science Department and off campus with the North Valley Diasaster Animal Group in Chico and the Sonomal County Horse Council.
February 2017 - IAWTI director and associates present emergency/disaster management lecture and discussion to third year UC Davis veterinary students as part of their VM430 core course. This year the students were given 8 scenarios and challenges such as loose livestock in public place, roadside horse trailer accident and small animal disaster sheltering.
January 2017 - The extracurricular specialized study program in disaster medicine for the student VERT club members begins this month with lectures on Incident Command System and Biosecurity given by Dr. Madigan and Dr. Davis. Special guest speakers were Dr. Grant Miller from CVMA and Dana Carey from Yolo County Office of Emergency Services.
January 2017 - Jim Green and the IAWTI/CEH disaster team continue meetings with UC Davis campus contacts such as UCD Fire Chief Nathan Trauernicht; VMTH Dr. Steven Epstein and Dr Guillaume Hoareau; WIFSS Dr. Amanda Arens; Safety Services Robert Wachter; planning meetings with the sVERT club.
November 2016 - IAWTI and the Center for Equine Health host Jim Green, UK firefighter and animal rescue specialist, to join UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine for one year to enhance responder safety and animal welfare with rescue and disaster response training for incidents involving animals.

June 2016 - IAWTI director and associates spoke with the Yolo County emergency Operational Area Coordinating Group about systems which could be used in Yolo County for animals during disasters and discussed future collaborations.
June 2016 - IAWTI associate presents 'Equine Rescue and Disaster Response: Preparing yourself and your community' lecture and demonstration at the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento.

May 2016 - IAWTI associates meet with Ryo Suzuki, DVM during his visit to UCD from Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
April 2016 - IAWTI hosts Jim Green, Watch Commander and Animal Rescue Specialist from England for two weeks. Mr. Green gave several presentations at the School of Veterinary Medicine, the Sacramento Zoo and to several community groups. He met with personnel from VMTH, IACUC, CEH, UCD Fire Service, and Department of Animal Science.
April 2016 - IAWTI associates meet with Debra Zoran, DVM from Texas A&M University to discuss disaster response curriculum and role of VERT in veterinary medical education.
April 2016 - VERT and the student Veterinary Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Club (VEDP) present several technical rescue demonstrations with equine mannequins (down horse in trailer, large animal lift) at the School of Veterinary Medicine for UC Davis Picnic Day.
April 2016 - IAWTI associates mentor Master of Public Health student (non-veterinary) for her thesis and spring quarter practicum work with Yolo County to develop disaster plan for Yolo County.

August 2014 - IAWTI director contributes to the disaster management issue of the Center for Equine Health’s Horse Report. This fall issue won first place in disaster management from American Horse Publications. The IAWTI director also made a video for the online segment covering equine evacuation and safe horse trailer loading.
June 2014 - IAWTI director co-writes “Heat advisory for horses: extreme heat guidelines,” which is shared via equine publications on the UC Davis VMTH page.

March 2014 - VERT responds to a West Plainfield Fire Department request for emergency assistance with an equine hit by a car. Sadly, the horse was badly injured and humane euthanasia is performed.
November 2013 - IAWTI associates host the 1st Annual Donkey Welfare Symposium, a 3 day lecture and lab continuing education conference.
October 2013 - IAWTI hosts a lecture from Colonel Dominique Grandjean of Paris, France, on the formal integration of veterinarians into fire departments in France.
