8:00 – 8:50 am Orthopedic Emergencies: Fractures and Tendon Lacerations
Eric Davis, DVM
Dr. Davis will present how to recognize a fracture and a tendon laceration; how to differentiate the degrees of severity; and how to stabilize an injured limb until the veterinarian arrives.        

8:55 – 9:45 am Orthopedic Emergencies: Amputation, The Last Chance
Aloisio Bueno, Med Vet, DACVS and Ted Vlahos, DVM
Drs. Vlahos and Bueno will present a novel technique for limb amputation that they developed, including success rates and complications. They will provide case studies to demonstrate these principles. They will discuss when amputation is a reasonable alternative to euthanasia.

9:45 – 10:00 am Orthopedic Emergencies: Panel Discussion
Al Bueno, Eric Davis, Ted Vlahos
The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear differing opinions on orthopedic injuries.

10:15 – 11:05 am Neurologic Conditions: Overview of the Neurologic Donkey
Monica Aleman, DVM, PhD, DACVIM
Dr. Aleman will present how one can recognize whether or not a donkey is showing a primary neurologic abnormality; the difference  between central and peripheral nerve dysfunctions; and the basics of anatomic localization of a neurologic lesion.

11:05 – 11:55 pm Neurologic Conditions: Laboratory Diagnosis of Neurologic Disease
Erin Goodrich, DVM, DACVPM
Dr. Goodrich will present various laboratory tests that are used to help diagnose neurologic disease and assess its severity. She will cover the techniques for taking each kind of sample and how they should be preserved and transported.

1:00 - 1:50 pm Neurologic Conditions: Issues of Recumbent Donkeys
Alex ThiemannMA, Vet MB, Cert AVP EP, MSc, AFHEA, MRCVS
Dr. Thieman will present how to decide if a recumbent donkey should be asked to stand and techniques for maintaining a recumbent donkey to provide sustenance and avoid decubital sores. She will discuss the use of slings and various lifting techniques, rescue glides, and assists.

2:30 – 3:50 pm Lab: Neurologic Evaluation in Donkeys
Monica Aleman, DVM, PhD, DACVIM
Dr. Aleman will demonstrate how to do a basic neurological exam on live donkeys. Attendees will then practice performing a basic neurological exam on healthy donkeys.

3:50 - 5:30 pm Lab: Get Your Ass Up! Moving and Lifting Recumbent Donkeys
Lais Costa, DVM, PhD, Alex Thiemann, MA, Vet MB, Cert AVP EP, MSc, AFHEA, MRCVS
Drs. Costa and Thiemann will demonstrate on a phantom how to properly use various pieces of equipment to move and lift recumbent donkeys.  They will cover techniques to position, roll, lift, and transport recumbent donkeys in a safe and humane manner for both the animals and handlers.

Kate Schoenhals, DVM
Dr. Schoenhals will present how veterinarians seeing donkeys with acute abdominal pain in the field use a decision tree to determine necessary treatment, the potential cause, and prognosis.

8:50 – 9:40 am Colic Challenges: Surgical Colic
Isabelle Kilcoyne, DVM, DACVS
Dr. Kilcoyne will present how the decision to take a donkey to surgery is made, the equipment required for colic surgery, and the overall process to complete a colic surgery. Cases seen at the VMTH will be used to discuss success rates and complications.

9:50 -10:40am Colic Challenges: The Strange Case of a Colicky Cutie Patootie

In this case discussion, a miniature donkey presented with a series of vague signs involving behavior, abdominal pain, and anorexia. Finding the cause and treatment required nutritional testing.

10:40 – 11:30 am Metabolic Issues: First Aid for Hyperlipemia
Cindy Xue, DVM, DACVIM (LAIM)
Dr. Xue will present how to recognize the basic signs of hyperlipemia, its causes, and why it is an emergency.

11:30- 12:30 Lunch

12:30 – 1:20 pm Metabolic Issues: My Ass is Dragging…Diagnosing Lethargy and Weight Loss
Emily Berryhill, DVM, DACVIM
Dr. Berryhill will present how to recognize weight loss, poor body condition and lethargy in a donkey. She will discuss the most common health and behavioral conditions that can cause such issues in donkeys.

1:20 – 2:10 pmMetabolic Issues: The Link Between Insulin and Laminitis
Cindy Xue, DVM, DACVIM (LAIM)
Dr. Xue will present the latest information on the link between insulin levels and laminitis, and how hyperinsulinemia damages laminar cells.

2:20 – 2:50 pm Global Asspects: Donkeys in Peru
Stacy Tinkler, DVM, MPH, DACVIM
Dr. Tinkler will present the history of donkeys in Peru, how they are currently used, and problems and issues of donkey welfare in rural Peru.

2:50 – 3:20 pm Global Asspects: Donkeys in Mexico
Victor Urbiola, MZV
Dr. Urbiola will present the history of donkeys in Mexico, how they are currently used, and problems and issues of donkey welfare in rural Mexico. He will also discuss wild donkeys in Mexico and the effects of the donkey skin trade on donkeys in Mexico.

3:20- 3:50 pm Donkey Castration in Large Numbers
Victor Urbiola, MZV
Dr. Urbiola will present why castrating large numbers of jacks is required and the challenges of castrating jacks. He will discuss the value of having the proper setting and equipment and coordinating proper help to get it done, surgeons, assistants, etc.
